Day 49: Mon 5 Feb – Ballarat to Sale

 Drive: 338 km

12-31 degC

We are getting used to sleeping in, only awaking at 7:30am.  After a quick walk, breakfast and pack up, we were on the road at 9:45am, heading for Lakes Entrance, a place we had driven through on a number of occasions, wanted to stop at, but hadn’t. First stop was Bacchus Marsh, on the side of the road, under some nice trees, next to a red lettuce farm.  Brewed up in the van with coffee to go, then set off again.  Had a bit of a time getting back onto the M1, but eventually found our way. We actually wanted to stop in Bacchus Marsh, but couldn’t find anywhere in the centre, or anywhere for that matter, that catered for RVs, especially caravans.

We refuelled the truck in Trafalgar and then did not stop again until we checked into the Sale Motor Village in … yes, Sale!  This is another place we had driven through on numerous occasions and always said “we should stop here one day”, and now we have.  Well, we did stop here once in 2014 on our way down to the TDU but it was just after Greg had his accident with the ute and did not feel much like being a tourist. And, we stayed in a motel a little out of town so did not see too much, except for the shopping centre.

After setting up, we had lunch then a rest.  We then did a walking recce of the pubs in town that were within walking distance of the van park.  Of the four that we looked at, only Jack Ryan’s Irish Bar had a readily available menu and very obliging staff. We came back to the van, had another rest (book reading) then set off into town for dinner.  Greg had one of the best Barra dishes he has had in a long time and Wendy’s steak with curly fries was not too bad either.  We left with fairly light wallets though!

Back at the van, we completed the night time routine and were in bed before the bugs came out!
