Day 47: Sat 3 Feb – Ballarat

 12-27 degC

We awoke to another fresh morning which did not warm up quick enough.  By the time we left for our ride at 9am, it was only 16 degC with a howling southerly headwind which made it feel even colder.  So, our first stop was at the Golden Nugget Bakery which won the competition in 2015 for the best vanilla slice. So, just to say we have had the best vanilla slice in Australia, we had to have one.  And it was good – probably a 8.5 out of 10.  Wasn’t too sweet, and didn’t fall apart tooo much when cut.  After lingering a little longer than usual (just to ensure it warmed up a bit outside) we kept going onwards, into the city to stroll through the Farmer’s Markets.  As suspected, there was nothing new in these markets, but we spent a good 45 minutes having a look.

Next stop was the Art Gallery of Ballarat (AGB).  This is the third art gallery Wendy has frequented on this trip and is quite enjoying it.  There was some very good art, and some very questionable stuff – “is that really called ‘Art’?”  Nevertheless, it was free and we had a good wander.  We then went in search of all the old buildings in town, and there are some quite spectacular ones.  There are also some very nice homes in the streets of Ballarat. Having had enough of old buildings and churches we found a Thai restaurant and had a bite to eat before making our way home via Lake Wendouree, where they just happened to be holding a rather large rowing regatta.

After a little rest and relaxation, we decided on the Ballarat Golf Club for dinner. So, off we went on foot (2.3km) only to find the kitchen is undergoing renos so no food!!!  A quick turn around, and we headed for Lazy Moes (had no idea what they serve) but just before we got there a whole bus load of kids turned up, so back towards home we trundled.  Maccas was next on the menu and then Greg suggested we buy a hot chook and some fresh bread rolls from Woolies, next to Maccas, and eat it in the van.  So, after almost 5km, that was dinner.  Not bad washed down with a glass or two.
