Day 51: Wed 7 Feb – Sale to Eden

 Drive: 349 km

16-34-26 degC

We decided a morning ride before we left was in order, so off we went.  Down past the swing bridge we went, and back again for short but quick’ish 15km.  There was a lot of moisture still in the air and Wendy was sweating profusely by the time we got home.  Breakfast and a pack up saw us departing a little after 10am.  The van park has metered power and a $10 deposit for the key to your ‘box’, refundable on departure.  Well, our power cost us $5.60 for less than 48 hours with only the fridge that would draw any real power.  Given that it cost about $2/day for a normal household of two to live, one has to wonder where they get $5 from.  Anyway, $27 + $2.80 is less than many van parks are charging for a powered site.  Next time, we will ask for rates, plus start point and end point, just to see what is really happening with power.

We had decided that Eden would be our next overnight stop, so off we went.  A late mornos was had at Bairnsdale, with lunch just before Cann River – we couldn’t wait to get to Cann River! We had never travelled the road from Cann River to Batemans Bay before and were hoping that the road would get better from Cann river on wards, as it had been pretty ordinary so far.  Last time we came through Cann River we turned left to Bombala, but continued straight, and kind of wished we had gone inland from here.  For Australia’s number 1 highway, it is a disgrace.  Very bumpy, and no shoulder at all.  Yes, they are doing it up, but it should have been done 10 years ago! A note to selves – if this road can be avoided, do it!

Anyway, we eventually made it to Eden under very windy conditions. We are both hoping the wind would die down tomorrow for our ride as trying to traverse this terrain in these winds will be a nightmare (for Wendy at least!).  We had set up and unpacked just after 4pm.  It was then time for a slow wander around the park before getting down to the serious business of pizza preparation for dinner.  We had already ascertained the Camp Kitchen had a functioning oven so could cook the pizzas in that.

We ate our pizzas overlooking the non-powered/camping area of the park where Gunther and Yvonne would have felt right at home – nice lush grass and a little bit of shade.  We then retired to the van for washing-up duties, blogging, cricket watching, reading and relaxing.

Day 50: Tue 6 Feb – Sale

 15-26 degC

A relatively early wake-up after the last few sleep-ins.  After two loads of washing and breakfast, we were on the bikes a little after 8:30am, riding out to West Sale first to make up time to get to the Information Centre and Art Gallery at or after opening time of 9am.  We arrived at the Centre and Gippsland Art Gallery (GAG) just after 9am and spent a good 40 minutes perusing the art, or what is supposed to be art. We were actually surprised with what we did see though.  It was then time to make our way to Redd Catt CafĂ© in the main street to meet up with a friend of Wendy’s from Army days in Darwin – Jayne Tauschke.  Jayne had seen Wendy’s FB post last night about having dinner at Jack Ryan’s and contacted Wendy to arrange a meeting.  It’s always nice to meet up with friends when you are so far from home.

After a two-hour mornos, we said good-bye to Jayne, headed off and rode out to the swing bridge, the oldest operational swing bridge in Australia, being intact and unaltered. We were getting a tad hungry by this stage so made our way home and had lunch and a rest.

Greg then went back out on the cycle path to the swing bridge as he had seen some feral blackberries on our first ride and he wanted to harvest them.  He came back with three “Tupperware” containers-full of them!! Wendy cleaned up from lunch and brought the washing in. It was then time to hit the shops for more groceries.
